Loretta was born in Philadelphia, raised in Delaware County and attended Nether Providence High School in Wallingford, Pennsylvania. She holds an ExMSE degree from the School of Engineering and Applied Science. After leaving Penn, she obtained a Doctor of Science degree in Engineering Management at The George Washington University’s School of Engineering and Applied Science in Washington, DC.

She worked for Verizon for more than eight years in IT, Project Management and Engineering before relocating to Suzhou China in 2004 to teach Software Engineering and Data & Computer Communications at Soochow University and work for Loop Telecom. In 2005, she moved to Beijing.

Her current responsibilities for the Penn Club of Beijing include Webmaster for the Penn Club of Beijing’s website and looking for interesting content for the site. She participated in alumni activities in Philadelphia, Washington, DC and Maryland in the 1990s.

Loretta currently has her own business, the Gartrell Group, Inc. which focuses on consulting, software development and geophysical technical services. When not working, Loretta loves reading, studying Chinese and meeting new people. Her hobbies are playing the piano and talking with other entrepreneurs.
